Color Sight Words

This week we've been focusing on recognizing and reading our color sight words. We mixed our primary colors up to create our secondary ones to paint a rainbow. Then we practiced writing all of our words and making a rainbow writing craft.

Check out these songs for more practice at home:

Magnet Painting

Magnet painting is a fun activity that sparks creativity with a combination of science and art. We got messy learning about mixing colors while breaking in our brand new art easels!

I love KeRol's magnet masterpiece!

Parent Teacher Interviews

Just a reminder that PTI's are this Thursday, March 22. There will be no classes, although you are welcome to bring your little one with you.

If you can't make it on Thursday but would still like to talk to us, feel free to set up a meeting either before of after school through email or a chat in the hall.

Nauryz Meyramy

March holds a special springtime holiday marking the beginning of a new year for our Sunway families from Kazakhstan. Saniya, her sister Djamilya and mom came in to show us traditional dress, houses, and shared some homemade baked goods with us to teach us about Nauryz Meyramy.  A very brave and confident Djamilya from grade 4 sang us a song to end their visit.

Thank you to Saniya's family for sharing the beauty of her country with us!

Our Tricky Leprechaun

We celebrate St. Patrick's Day every year on March 17th by trying to catch that elusive wee Irish fairy called a leprechaun and aye, leprechauns have been mixing mischief and mayhem for years. Legend has it that leprechauns have a pot of gold stashed at the end of a rainbow and must give it to the person who catches them!

On Monday we made our very own traps and set them up every night with the gold coin that we earn by listening and trying our best.

So far, no luck, but I hope we catch him soon – look at the tricks he's playing on us!

Japanese agar-agar

Today in cooking class we played with made agar-agar!

Agar-agar is a jelly-like substance in long, translucent strands that resembles shredded plastic. They need to soak until they soften and then boil in water to be dissolved completely. Then we added some color. Sodexho had some chilled beforehand so that we could cut them up and cover them in powered sugar before eating!

Silly Socks

Silly Sock Day was so much fun! Thanks to all our parents, each and every one!
We drew them, graphed them, laughed at them too.
Can't wait to do it again next year,
How about you?

Mr Brown Can Moo!

We celebrated Dr Suess's birthday by reading some of his books all this week. Today we read Mr. Brown Can Moo! Can You? After reading the book, we made up our very own sounds and drew what kind of animal or thing would make such a noise. Then we tried our very hardest to make our imaginary creature out of all kinds of art supplies.

Thanks to Shinyun's mom and baby sister for coming in to help with our small reading groups today!

Find Mr. Brown Can Moo! and many other Dr. Suess books in our school library! Dr. Suess books are funny and engaging for young readers and a great way to teach rhyming words.

Scissor Practice at Home

How can you help your child develop their cutting skills?

Cutting requires muscle control, accuracy and coordination. Don’t expect your child to grasp cutting right away, it can take weeks and even months. While you cannot control when your child will be able to use scissors, you can make sure your child has the proper hand placement. Remind them, “I need a thumbs up!”  You can also put a marker dot, sticker or a smiley face on the child’s thumb and remind them it needs to point to the ceiling.

Here are some fun ideas that your child can use to practice proper scissor techniques…
  • Playdough. Cutting, kneading and pinching the dough will help with developing hand muscles.
  • Cookie dough.  Make up a batch of cookie dough and cut it up before baking.
  • Straws
  • Yarn
  • Colored construction paper.  Let your child free cut, then glue the shapes on to make an artwork mosaic.
  • Play with scrapbook scissors.  They come with such fun zig-zags and scalloped designs that it makes cutting even more fun.
  • Scissor cutting practice sheets

Happy Birthday Dr. Suess

My Princess Boy

We had a visit from our very own Princess Boy on Pink Shirt Day to emphasize the importance of acceptance and embracing uniqueness. Click the image to watch the read aloud.
