Sunway Parents

Our Sunway parents are the absolute best and they proved it again yesterday by their overwhelming support of our first ever potluck. Every single one of our kids wore something special to show us their heritage and we had mountains of amazing food! Our Parent Council also surprised us with an amazing display in the library with booths taking us around the world. Our kids didn't want to leave!

A huge thank you and so much gratitude to everyone for making International Month our best month so far!

Welcome Angel Soh

We have a student teacher joining our Kindergarten team on Monday. Her name is Angel Soh and she is a 4th year Early Childhood student from James Cook University.

We can't wait for her to start her seven week practicum with us here at Sunway!

Mystery Reader

We had such fun trying to figure out who our Mystery Reader would be today. She gave us 3 great clues but no one guessed it would be Medha's mom! She brought us a really cool anatomy book and taught us all about the human body!

Thank you so much Rehka for everything today!

Our Passage to India

We were very fortunate to have so many of our Indian parents come in and take us on a tour of their magical country. We dressed up in beautiful, colorful clothing, learned about spices and other traditional foods and even got to sample some delicious breakfast! The kids showed us how to pray and we had rangoli drawn outside our door for good luck and one inside for more!

Honestly, our parents have taught us so much this month not just about their countries but about generosity and sharing. Thank you to all who came today!

International Peace Day

We were the coolest kids in school wearing our tie dyed shirts during the International Peace Day assembly. Peace Day is dedicated to world peace, respect, safety and dignity for all and specifically the absence of war and violence.  In keeping with the traditions established through the story “Sadako and the 1000 Paper Cranes” we will be sending all of the paper cranes we made to Hiroshima Japan. Thanks to our parent community and tenacious teachers, we doubled our target of making 1000 paper cranes!

Many thanks to Ms Benitha for being our creative and fearless art director!

Konnichiwa

I have always wanted to visit Japan and with the help of our Japanese parents yesterday, I really felt like I did get a taste of it. Our first experience was seeing their beautiful traditional summer kimonos as they read us a hand drawn folktale called "Peach Boy". We learned about some sports like sumo wrestling and aikido, got to take a walk through the art gallery and they brought some toys and fans for the kids to play with. I can't thank these five parents enough for taking us on an incredible tour of Japan!

Arigatou gozaimasu!

Marathon of Hope

Our inaugural Terry Fox Fun Run was an amazing success! The kids pushed through with no complaints and the parents did an amazing job of walking beside us, cheering us on and keeping us hydrated. We made headbands and banners and learned the difference between a superhero and real life heroes like Terry Fox and some of the people who inspire us daily.

Our Staycation in Malaysia

After our trip to Australia, we were a bit tired so we decided to stay closer to home and take a bus tour of Malaysia. Our tour guide was Tracy, Xin Tang's mom! She taught us all about the native fruits of the country and about some other landmarks and states we can explore outside of Johor. Thank you so much Tracy for all of the effort you put into your presentation.

And another big thank you to Santosh's mom for the gigantic flag that he came wrapped up in!

Terry Fox Run

Every year, millions of people in close to 25 countries participate in the Terry Fox Run. Terry is a true Canadian hero who continues to inspire generations after losing his leg to cancer and running across Canada in his Marathon of Hope in order to raise money for cancer research.

Come cheer us on this Wednesday September 20th to celebrate Terry in a fun run. Students are welcome to put on their high socks and headbands and wear their sporty clothes for the day. The run begins at 11:00 and will be around Emerald Lake (or as far as we can make it!)

It was clear skies during the first stop on our International Month travel itinerary. Our first stop was Australia with our captain, Melissa. Melissa is Archie's mom and she read us some of his favourite books from home and then we did some math with didgeridoo's, kangaroo's and boomerangs too!

Thanks for being our first Mystery Reader Melissa, you are as brave as you are lovely!

Sight Word Sticker Books

Sight Word Sticker Books are a great motivator to get students excited about practicing, learning, and retaining their sight words! Each student can use their own sight word booklet based on their skill level to practice and track the words that they have mastered. It allows students to see their own progress and take ownership of their learning. For each page of sight words learned, the student will receive a sticker.

Please practice with your child at home during the week and return the books every Monday.
